Legalize Immigrants

Dave Thomas

Who are the Illegal Immigrants?

Native Americans have recognized a homeland security problem since 1492.  The ancestors of most of those who are opposing the immigration of Mexican and Central Americans came to America without permission of Native Americans.  Significant numbers of them committed terrorist acts (including intentional germ warfare) against Native Americans.  Most Mexicans and Central Americans have Native American ancestors who have lived here for thousands of years, while most United States citizens have no ancestors who lived here more than 400 years ago.

Liberals Support Legalizing Needed Immigration

During the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s, liberals supported abolition of slavery.  Conservatives supported slavery.  Slavery was abolished.  During the late 1800s and early 1900s, liberals supported legalizing property, voting and other rights for women.  Conservatives opposed them.  Women obtained their rights.  During the 1950s, liberals supported civil rights for Afro-Americans, opposed by conservatives.  Civil rights legislation was passed and enforced.  Liberals mounted a campaign against poverty (opposed by Conservatives) and poverty was greatly reduced, although under our present Conservative national administration poverty is again increasing.  Liberals have recently supported equal rights for gays.  Conservatives oppose them.  Gays are obtaining equal rights.

Liberals now support legalizing immigrants who come to work in our country.  Conservatives oppose legalization.  Immigration will become legalized.  Just as we couldn’t enforce prohibition of alcohol, we can’t enforce prohibition of immigration in response to work opportunities.  Why would we want to discourage work which is a major freedom and opportunity?  We just need to give all of our immigrants the same rights that our pre-1920 immigrant ancestors had.

Immigrants and Social Security

Conservatives have attempted to wreck social security, arguing that there aren’t enough workers to support our seniors.  But there is no shortage of working age North Americans.  Instead of attempting to jail working age immigrants who will support our seniors, we should be educating them to increase their productivity, so they can provide even more support for social security and other social programs as well as for themselves.

One path to democratic global governance is reforming the United Nations.  Another path is for the European Union to continue to expand, the creation of an American Union which includes all the nations of North, Central and South American, similar unions created in Asia, Africa and the Mid-East, and ultimately their combination.  Both pathways will be created over the next century.   Political, economic and social integration of our American nations should be encouraged, with assistance for those who suffer from this integration.

Should English Be Made Our Official Language?

They say the United States is an English-speaking country.  We also speak hundreds of other languages.  English is only the most common.  All children who grow up in here learn to speak English.  So do many who arrive older.  So what’s the problem that is addressed by making English official?  This is the kind of ridiculous unneeded unrealistic ideological measure that some politicians love to propose.

Bush’s Immigration Policy

I predict that Bush’s attempt to seal our southern border will be about as effective as his other projects: stimulating a fair economic growth, Iraq, Katrina, Medicare prescription drugs, etc.  Where’s Rove when Bush needs him.  Bush can’t win on immigration.  To the extent he tries to block the borders, lock up or deport 12 million immigrants, he’ll please his conservative supporters in the short run, but cost the Republicans most of the votes of the Hispanic voters (the fastest growing voting group) in the long run.  And it won’t work.

And the Republicans certainly won’t try to convict their politically supporting businesses for hiring undocumented voters.  If he tries to provide a pathway for undocumented immigrants to become documented, he will be accused of amnesty by the conservatives.  Poor Bush.

We should remember that most of our immigrating ancestors were undocumented.  Until the 1920’s, no documents were required for entering the United States.  They only had to show they were not diseased.

With our actions to prevent immigration become increasingly Draconian, has the Statue of Liberty and its inscription become false advertising.  Maybe it should be removed or at least shrouded until we return to open borders which helped us become the greatest peacefully diverse country on earth.
