Edward Song on Reaching Out to Clinton Supporters

The time has come for Barack Obama's supporters to reach out to Hillary Rodham Clinton's supporters. I am appalled that Obama supporters continue to hurl insults at Clinton and at her supporters even after he has clinched the nomination.

 

Three months ago, I was willing and happy to work for Obama's election if Clinton did not win the nomination. But I have never experienced so much diatribe toward my candidate and even toward myself from fellow Democrats for supporting another Democrat.  Now, I will support Obama only because I would be proud if an African American were to be elected president.

 

In an intense and closely fought campaign, the losing side is always demoralized and disappointed. It's up to the winning side to reach out to the losing side. Nearly 18 million people voted for Clinton during the primaries, and about 30 million Democrats and Independents who will vote in the general election would have preferred Clinton and McCain over Obama and McCain.

 

With Obama's six-point lead over McCain in the national polls, 3 million voters switching their vote to McCain would give the Republicans another presidential victory. So I suggest Obama supporters persuade Clinton supporters to go out and vote for Obama.  Obama is not entitled to their votes — votes are earned. Edward Song
